Youth Development in Jordan with Seenaryo
teamArchie, has been supporting Seenaryo’s Childrens’ theatre projects in Jordan for the last 3 years. Using a participatory approach to theatre, Seenaryo facilitates the creation of imaginative, collaborative and cathartic performances. We are excited that slowly but surely, children, parents and whole communities are beginning to see the value of taking part in theatre activities as demonstrated in this powerful video from Seenaryo:
We have watched children and young people grow into confident young leaders with ideas to share and the tools they need to express those ideas. However, with youth unemployment in Jordan estimated to be as high as 50%, we need to do more to equip young people with the life skills, resilience and creativity to reach their potential. Through Seenaryo we aim to support 30 young people, who have graduated from the children’s theatre programmes, to become leaders, artists, and facilitators.
The 30 young leaders will come from two main areas in Jordan: Mafraq, a city in the North of Jordan which is home to 25% of all Syrian refugees in Jordan, and Rusaifeh, a poverty pocket in the Eastern part of Amman. In each cohort there will be a minimum of 40% of participants from refugee backgrounds, working alongside local Jordanians. The 3 year programme will enable the young people to:
-
build artistic and teamworking skills by collaborating with others to devise original pieces of theatre
-
grow in confidence by performing their high-level ‘Studio’ production to a wide public audience in a professional theatre
-
gain facilitation and leadership skills through Seenaryo’s Level 1 & Level 2 Theatre Leadership training and running their own satellite projects
-
acquire work experience and professional skills by being employed as assistant facilitators on Seenaryo projects
-
benefit from mentoring from Seenaryo and industry professionals as they take steps towards establishing their career paths.
In turn, it is hoped that these new leaders will run projects to inspire and motivate young people in their local communities, ensuring that hundreds of the most vulnerable children have a chance to learn, lead, heal and thrive through theatre.
teamArchie and Seenaryo are looking for additional partners to continue to expand Children’s Theatre and develop this new programme in Jordan and potentially beyond. The full report document is here:
